Sonoma Wineries Must Disclose Smoke Exposure

Sonoma County wineries are now required to disclose wildfire smoke exposure levels for all wines produced during fire season under new regulations aimed at protecting consumer confidence. The unprecedented transparency requirement affects hundreds of producers.

Smoke taint has become an increasing concern as wildfires regularly threaten Northern California wine regions. Affected wines can develop unpleasant ashy or medicinal flavors that render them unsalable.

Industry groups initially resisted the disclosure requirement but ultimately supported the measure as a way to rebuild consumer trust. Testing protocols have been standardized to ensure consistent reporting across producers.
